FAKE, FALSE AND QUESTIONABLE PATCHES AND BADGES

It is known that many dishounest peoples all around the world produce and sell/ trade false and fake patches and badges.  This is really a pity, then I think this destroy the whole hobby of patch/ badge collecting.

Well all know that it is not very easy to do something about this, and it is very hard to know if a patch/ badge is a falke, false, a fantasy product or if it is a real thing.  With this background I decided to make a page over false and fake patches so other collectors can see if they have such patches in their collection.  Basicly I have only taken false and fake patches and badges I have got by trading with other collectors, which not mayby don't know that they have traded a false or fake patch/ badge.  This is almost the same as when you got virus into your computer, the sender not always know that he/ she sendt the virus to others.

Well, anyway let's all fight againt this fake, false, fantasy or reproduction stuff.

Fake and False items

User of the patch/ badge - Bruker av merket False patch/ badge - Falskt merke Real patch/ badge - Ekte merke
Norwegian Police DELTA unit (Norway)

The fake patch say that DELTA is established in 1976 but this is not correct.  It was established in 1975.  You can also see that the bear is different from the real patch.

Kentucky State Police (USA)

South Dakota Highway Patrol (USA)

The original is smaller and more detailed with a plastic backing.  The repro is larger, less detailed and has cloth or paper backing.

North Carolina Highway Patrol (USA)

This is confirmed as a fake patch, so collectors be aware of this.

Israel National Police (ISRAEL)

Austria Federal Police (AUSTRIA)

Vienna Airport SWAT Unit "Kranich"

Austria Federal Police (AUSTRIA)

K-9 Handler

Justizwache Einsatzgruppe (AUSTRIA)

The fake patch has plastic back and have thicker letters compared to the real one.

Police helicopter unit FSST of WEGA (AUSTRIA)

The fake patch has plastic back and there is no white stripes on the helicopter.

Police diver unit ESG of WEGA (AUSTRIA)

The old WEGA Diver patch ("ESG") was recently reproduced.

The original patch was used from 1993 to 2001 and there was only one version.

The original always had a merrow (embroidered) border.

The repro has a flat (knife cut) border.

Besides, the embroidery work on the original was much finer than on the repro.

(You can see the lack of details on the WEGA logo and the diver figure.)

Polizei Deinsthundeführer (Austria)

On real patch, the dog's pupil is always

in one corner of the eye, basically looking

up.  In most reproduced versions, the

dog's pupil is more in the center of the

eye, looking at you.

Also some other details like the eagle or

the lettering are different.

Zürich City Police (SWITZERLAND)

The reproduced patch is terribly made.  The repro does not have dots above the "U" in Zürich and the making is different.  So again , watch out so you don't get this false one.

Mexico Police, Districo Federal Seguridad - Agenta Especiale

The word "DISTRICO" is not correct written.  The correct word in Spanish is "DISTRITO".  The word "ESPECIALE" is not correct written.  The correct word in Spanish is "ESPECIAL" so this is a fake/ false patch.

??

Guardia Urbana Policia Local K-9 Unit

The Guardia Urbana Policia Local has it's own K-9 unit but they have not their own patch.  They use the ordinary patch for Guardia Urbana Policia Local so this is a "fantasy" product.

They use the ordinary police patch which rest of the police officers in Guardia Urbana Policia Local use.

Czech Republic National Police

There are obviously three versions of the regular patch around:

-blue/ woven

- dark blue (almost like black)/ woven

- blue/ embroidered

Only the woven ones are "good" patches and officially used.  The embroidered one is considered a fake!  The lighter blue woven version was the old style, the dark blue woven version is the new style.

German Police, Bundesgrenzschutz GSG9

This GSG9 patch is not an authorized patch by the German Police, Bundesgrenzschutz Grenzschutzgruppe 9, and is then a fake patch.  A serious police unit as BGS, GSG9 would never use the symbol in the middle.  The BGS has informed that this patch is a fake one.

Icelandic Police for UN dutys

A fantasy version of the Icelandic UN duty police patch was made up and
called official even though it was never worn by officers on foreign missions. It is a flag patch with the text Icelandic Police on top.

However, the only authorized version contains of two pieces (a flag and a completey separate tab). If someone offers the other style as
official, it must be considered a fake.

Landespolizei Fürstentum Liechtenstein

There is a fake patch out there from Lichtenstein, and it is now confirmed that this one is FAKE.

As you can see is there a difference between the real and the fake one.  The fake one has e.g. the country name written as FURSTENTUM LIECHTENSTEIN and the real one has this written as FÜRSTENTUM LIECHTENSTEIN.

SWAT Police Fürstentum Liechtenstein

There has been made a repro/ fake patch from the SWAT police in Liechtenstein.  As you can see the fake patch comes close to the original but it has an embroidered border and a different backside.

The original patch has a flat (knife cut) border and also a different grenade in the center.

So patch collectors, be aware.

Swiss Police, Police Cantonale - Kantons Polizei Fribourg

There is a fake patch out there from Switzerland, and it is now confirmed that this one is FAKE.

Collectors: be aware !

Nicaragua Police

It has been informed me there is a repro patch out there from the Nicaragua Police.  The original has a thick embrodiered border and is a little bigger than the repro.  Beside this you can also see some slight differences in the design and the lettering.

Collectors: be aware !

Micronesia Police, Truk

I have been given the info that the old patch from the Micronesia State of Truk now has been reproduced and are a fake patch.  The fake patch is much larger than the original and was obviosly made with a relatively modern machine.  Most of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific (Palau, Saipan, Truk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Marshall Islands) used this patch styke.  There was only one known version of the Truk patch.

So be careful out there, so you don't get the fake one.....

Utah Highway Patrol

There are a false patch out there from the Utah Highway Patrol in US.  You can tell by the colors and the absence of the ® symbol on the bottom right of the real patch.  The Utah Highway Patrol registered it's logo as a Trademark and ALL patches have the ® symbol on them.  The real patch was originally adobted in 1847.  Thanks to David for this information.

Albania National Police

There are a false patch out there from the Albania National Police.  The original and real patch are only woven.  They never had an embroidered version.

San Marino Police

There are a false patch out there from the San Marino Police.  The original and real patch are only woven.  They never had an embroidered version.

Andorra Police, GIPA

It seems that the GIPA patch has been reproduced.

The original patch has a velcro backing and the embroidery work of the eagle is a bit finer.

There is no doubt that the repro is well made but if you see the pictures, slight details become obvious.

Be careful when being offered the reproduced patch!

There is also many patches out there which we don't know if it is real or false.  I hope that I can get some feedback about this patches to tell which one is real or which one is false, or mabybe both are false or real what would I know.  Anyway I hope for your help and not just for myself but for all us serious patch collectors.

Questionable items

User of the patch/ badge - Bruker av merket Patch 1 - Patch 1 Patch 2 - Patch 2
France National SWAT Group (Groupe D'Intervention - Gendarmerie Nationale (FRANCE)

For a long time I thought the patch 1 was a fake and false patch, but due to information I now have received this might be a legal patch. The Frenchman that told me this (then a friend of his father is a member of GIGN) are sure that the patch (patch 1) is even used more often than the patch 2.  Anybody who know more about this, or is there somebody that can send me a picture that show GIGN officers that wear this patch 1 ?

Polizei Deinsthundeführer (Austria)

Anybody who know which one is real, or maybe both are real but anyway there is two patches out from the same department which look almost the same.

As you see one patch have a hyphen between Polizei and Diensthundeführer and the other one has not.

Both patches are real.  There were two versions, one with the dash (hyphen) and one without.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Institutional Division

Anybody who know which one is real, or maybe both are real but anyway there is two patches out there from the same department which look almost the same.

Thank's a lot to Greg Dunn CO III, TDCJ at the Texas Department of Crimianl Justice Department for sharing this info with us.  He sendt me a mail where he wrote:

"Both patches are real, the grey one is the uniform patch worn on our shirt and jackets, the gold/blue one is worn by female officers on a smock that they are authorized to wear over their uniforms.......the smock is called a "killing shield", in reference to inmates mastrubating in front of the female officers."

V E R I F I E D

Netherland County Police (Gemeentepolitie)

As you can see there is a slight difference between this two patches, but you have to take a very close look.

Both patches are real because there was a varitety of versions until the Municipal forces were abslished in 1994.

Swiss Police, Kantons Polizei Aargau

I am several other collectors thought that this patch was a fake and false one.  But I have now got a verification that this one has been a prototype when the force renewed their uniform in 1990's.  Thanks to Richi for this great information.

For a long time I thought that this patch was a false patch, after some info I got.  Anyway several other patch collectors has now verifyed this as a real patch.  This is an obsolete social patch.  There is a simular patch that are fantasy, but that one has an older shield shaped version.
